Stairs & ladder => escaleras

"Stairs" and "ladder" are usually translated into Spanish as "escalera". This exchange occurred today:

Student: So if a ladder and a stair are one next to each other and I say "Necesito usar la escalera" [I need to use the ladder/stairs]. How would you know what I mean.

Teacher: Puedes usar las manos para apuntar. [You can use your hands to point.]

Student: What if I have no arms?
